The Legal Services Facility (LSF) was originally established in 2011 as a sub-component of the Tanzania Governance Support Programme 2011-2015, a bilateral agreement between the Governments of Tanzania and Denmark with the objective to support legal aid and paralegat service provision in Tanzania. In 2013, 1SF was registered as a nonprofit Company Limited by Guarantee. Currently, 1SF manages a basket fund of around US $ 25 million for the period 2016-2021, to which the present main contributors are DANIDA and DFID/UKAID. (SF operates in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar and in its 2016-2021 strategic
approach aims to increase accessibility of legal aid services, to promote legally empowered communities, in particular for women, to create a conducive environment for legal aid and legal empowerment and to contribute to institutional sustainability of legal aid.
